How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My product represents the slightly niche genre of rock music fans. They can be any age, ethnicity or nationality. They are represented as people who can often go against the norms of society. My magazine uses a lot of black as that is a color often associated with the genre of rock and its fans. They are people who often don’t find themselves fitting in with what is normal. They look to other communities, other societies to fit in. Rock fans are a subculture. I represent them as being the “normal ones” in a world that is different. This is slightly juxtaposed as the reason many people become fans of Rock music is because of the opposite.

Pre-Production

Location, Props and Costumes

I have decided that my images will be taken in a studio. This is because I will have access to a green screen which will allow me to gain the backgrounds I am looking for easily. Using a studio will also provide easier access to any equipment I need. I can then also immediately transfer them to a computer from the studio so they will be ready for me wherever I choose to edit. I did not use any specific costumes or props in the shoot.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I feel that Time Inc. would be the best publishing company for my magazine as they are one of the top publishers in the world. They have the required experience in the music field as they currently publish NME magazine. NME is more of a general music magazine which caters for all genres. My magazine is targeted at slightly more of a niche market but the genre is still very popular nonetheless and should sell well under the promotion of Time Inc. as the target audience is still a very large group. Part of the reason I have chosen Time Inc. is because they are a recognizable name and stores will immediately sell their products because they have a reputation when it comes to producing magazines. This increases our access to bigger stores such as Tesco and Asda. A disadvantage of siding with a larger company like Time Inc. is that they would probably be quite controlling in regards to the magazine. They know what they are doing though as they have had so much success in the past. Another advantage of them being so big is that they would bring the opportunity to cross-promote through their other products which would only be beneficial for us as they are a well-known company and have some major names under their brand such as NME, Time and Sports Illustrated. Time Inc. would also sell an online version of the magazine and be able to gain some sponsorships to promote the magazine. If the magazine takes off under Time Inc.’s leadership the potential is there to create some synergy such as a TV music channel or an awards show.
